Number of hip arthroscopy surgeons is increasing
January 2018
In December 2017 Duchman et al. reported an increase in the number of ‘sports surgery’ trained surgeons in the U.S. performing hip arthroscopic surgery. However, more than 2/3 of these surgeons had only performed 5 or less procedures … and 35% of all hip arthroscopies in the U.S. were performed by just a small cohort of high volume surgeons, making up just 6.5% of the surgeons claiming to be ‘hip arthroscopists’. Hip arthroscopy is technically challenging and the quality of patients’ outcomes is very likely to be related to the volume of procedures performed by the individual surgeon.
